Introduction to Bedside Ultrasound (IBUS)
The IBUS digital textbook is a FOAM resource, which has been providing quality Point of Care Ultrasound education since 2012.
This site hosts the 2026 IBUS refresh, (making IBUS available in a universally-accessible web format.) The refresh is well under way with work being performed by volunteers. Fixed and unavoidable costs are sponsored by the Remote Ultrasound Fellowship.
→ Feel free to peruse the completed chapters using the left side bar. New chapters will be added as they come available for the remainder of 2026 and until the Refresh is complete. Once complete, we hope to begin updating content to create an updated IBUS Second Edition (always FOAM).

Hello! (An introduction to IBUS)
Welcome to the Introduction to Bedside Ultrasound (IBUS) digital textbook. This project is the product of an exceptional amount of hard work from a lot of people over a long period of time. We are super excited about this book, but let's face it, we're always super excited.
It takes a true team to produce an interactive, digital textbook, and working with everyone involved has been amazingly rewarding. You can read more about #The History of the IBUS project below, but for now we want to especially thank the following; this certainly wouldn't have been possible without them.

The History of the IBUS project
Oh wow, you're really into the background story, hey?! Here you go...
2012 Drs Mike Mallin & Matt Dawson went on a benevolent, but evil-genius rampage of invention to enhance access to not just advanced, but comprehensive, fellowship level PoCUS for physicians the world over. They created the very first of its kind, Emergency Medicine virtual ultrasound fellowship, the Ultrasound Leadership Academy
Circa 2014 to 2020 the mad doctors created:
- The Ultrasound Podcast
- The One Minute Ultrasound iPhone App,
- Castlefest (also Bendfest and another one in Yellowstone), multi-day PoCUS conferences the likes of which have never been seen since.
- And of course the original version of these textbooks: Introduction to Bedside Ultrasound (Volumes 1 &2)
Drs Mallin & Dawson have since moved on to found and operate Wild Health
2021 Drs Dave Kirschner and Jonathan Wallace, alumni and former faculty of the Ultrasound Leadership Academy, established a spin off virtual ultrasound fellowship program, the Rural Ultrasound Fellowship offering a similar but rural-generalism modified curriculum of comprehensive PoCUS. Familiar with the original IBUS books, these were incorporated as the cornerstone of RUF's self-study curriculum.
By 2025 The "RUF" had grown to accommodate 44 fellows. The IBUS Volumes remained a highly popular and readable reference source, but required a refresh. Permission was obtained from the original authors to review, refresh and repackage the OG content into the second Edition of this FOAM project.
